The report says both companies’ decisions to have customers install newer firmware on older phones “caused serious dysfunctions and reduced performance significantly, thereby accelerating the process of replacing them.” Last year, Apple published a letter to customers apologizing for the “misunderstanding” regarding older iPhones being slowed down. Bug fixes & polish This update also provides a few fixes to address the recent app crashes that some people are experiencing on Android 8 & 9. While the Samsung Note 4 / Marshmallow OS problem wasn’t as publicized as Apple’s slowdown drama, there are plenty of forums where people gripe about the issues they encountered, from rapid battery drain to data connection dropouts with titles like “ Note 4 destroyed by 6.0.1 update.” In a more detailed document from the AGCM, the organization says Samsung didn’t tell people any of this could happen, and while it’s unclear if Samsung knew or should have known, the Italian government believes it is a problem that the company did not inform its customers. This made people have to pay high out-of-pocket repair costs to fix the phone, as the Note 4 was two years old by then and out of warranty.

The organization’s summary says that when Samsung put out the Android Marshmallow 6.0.1 update - meant for the newer Galaxy Note 7 - those who installed it on the Note 4 found the firmware was too demanding for the phone, leading it to malfunction in certain cases. Samsung is also receiving a €5 million fine ($5.7 million) from the AGCM.

The company’s fix, which came as an update in 10.2.1, was released without warning customers that it would throttle CPUs on older devices with aging batteries in order to prevent the occurrences of these random shutdowns.Īpple is also being hit with a second €5 million fine for not giving customers information about their devices’ batteries, such as average lifespan and the procedures for how to maintain and replace them. Because the new iOS required greater energy demands, those using it on older iPhones experienced unexpected shutdowns. The AGCM is levying a €5 million fine ($5.7 million) against Apple for problems that occurred on various models of the iPhone 6 when users installed iOS 10, which was developed for the iPhone 7. Now, the Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato (AGCM) has issued a statement saying both companies violated several consumer codes, and it has issued fines.

Dont fancy flashing a new ROM yet as this takes some time and patience and luck.Back in January, Italy’s antitrust organization launched two separate investigations against Apple and Samsung to determine if the companies were intentionally using software updates to slow down customers’ devices. Its all a bit strange how I now no longer get the emmc error. I tried exiting the boot menu using the reboot menu option and the phone locked up requiring a battery removal to recover. Then I tried to read the recovery logs twice.

tried recovery but then got the "dm-verity verification failed". only way to recover was by removing the battery, luckily I can do that with the note 4. And then it locked up with the Vibrator on. Changing apps was slower and gmail took several seconds to start. So much so that I turned off some of the graphics settings to speed up the interface. Updated my note 4 over the air on saturday and the phone had I believe got more sluggish than usuall. It looks like the update has struck again. I wouldn't buy another Samsung as they have created a problem and aren't able to fix it, how can they be so crass? Just imagine if every manufacturer could do this especially after 30 months of usage. Thanks for the info - it still amazes me that a manufacturer can kill it's hardware that's in its customers hands and then offer a solution of buying a replacement. Good luck with getting your phone sorted, I gave up with mine after many, many hours of frustration! However, I still prefer the Note 4 for certain things. I've replaced the Note 4 with a Galaxy S8+ and so far, so good. The phone was otherwise in mint condition and I eventually got tired of wasting so much of my valuable time trying to get it to work. I sold it on eBay as "Not working / for parts only" and had 20 watchers on the phone and over 500 viewings.

Also, when plugging it into a PC via a USB cable, I got the message ' device not recognized'. They told me not to waste my money trying to get the phone fixed, but to put my money into a new phone, as the Note 4 was 'old technology' now (surprise, surprise !)įollowing the Android 6.0.1 O/S upgrade, the phone eventually would not even turn on. I also took the phone to the Samsung Experience Store in Cardiff. User have tried all the fixes posted on this forum and nothing works.
